Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #91

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker issue number 91 was published in 1961 by Dell Comics as part of their long-running Four Color anthology series and subsequent standalone title. The comic emerged during the height of the character's popularity in post-war American animation, serving as a print extension of the energetic, anarchic personality Woody established in theatrical shorts. These comics were designed to translate the frantic pacing of the cartoons into the static, narrative-driven medium of the four-color comic book.

The illustrative style for this era relied on the house style of Western Publishing, which frequently employed artists tasked with capturing the distinct physical comedy of Lantz's characters. The design choices focused on expressive, exaggerated postures that mirrored the kinetic animation frames, allowing readers to follow Woody's chaotic antics through sequential art. Upon release, these issues were widely distributed through newsstands and drugstores, cementing the character's presence in the domestic print market alongside other contemporary animal protagonists.
