Where it came from
The Cursed Hideo figure was produced by Funko as part of their Pop! Animation line, specifically highlighting the haunting imagery from the Junji Ito Collection anime. Released to capitalize on the rising international popularity of Ito’s unique brand of body horror and surrealist manga, the figure captures Hideo from the 'Slug Girl' story, one of the most recognizable and disturbing narratives in the author's extensive bibliography.
The design team at Funko focused on translating Ito's intricate, high-contrast ink style into their signature stylized vinyl form. By simplifying the character's facial features and the slug-like protrusion while maintaining the unsettling atmosphere of the source material, the design aims to strike a balance between collector-friendly aesthetics and the macabre essence of the original character art. It was released to a generally positive reception among horror enthusiasts and fans of the Junji Ito Collection looking for representative physical merchandise.
