Where it came from
Hello Kitty, the global icon created by Yuko Shimizu for the Japanese company Sanrio, made her debut in 1974. Originally designed to adorn small vinyl coin purses, the character was intended to embody a sense of kawaii, or cuteness, meant to bridge the gap between simple gifts and meaningful communication. Her design, characterized by an absence of a mouth and minimalist features, allows the viewer to project their own emotions onto her, a choice that has sustained her immense popularity for decades.
The Funko Pop! iteration of Hello Kitty, numbered 70 in the Sanrio series, translates this classic aesthetic into the brand's signature stylized vinyl form. Part of the broader Sanrio collection released by Funko to celebrate various characters from the franchise, this figure maintains the character's traditional red bow and blue overalls. Since its release, the figure has been received as a staple collectible for fans of both the Sanrio brand and the Pop! vinyl line, reflecting the enduring cross-generational appeal of the Hello Kitty design.
