Where it came from
Hello Kitty was originally created by Yuko Shimizu for the Japanese company Sanrio in 1974, debuting on a vinyl coin purse. The design was intended to be a simple, accessible character that could appeal to children and adults alike, eventually becoming a global icon of 'kawaii' or cute culture. This aesthetic emphasizes minimalism and softness, which has allowed the character to remain culturally relevant across decades through constant reinvention.
The Funko Pop! iteration of Hello Kitty, numbered 65 in the Sanrio series, represents the convergence of the iconic character's visual language with Funko's signature stylized vinyl format. These figures are characterized by their oversized heads and simplified features, a design approach intended to highlight the essence of the character while fitting within a uniform collectible taxonomy. Upon its release, this figure was integrated into the broader Sanrio merchandising line, appealing to collectors who favor both the legacy of the Hello Kitty brand and the standardized aesthetic of modern designer toys.
