Where it came from
Hello Kitty was originally created by Yuko Shimizu for the Japanese company Sanrio in 1974, debuting as a character on a vinyl coin purse. The design was intended to bridge the gap between Japanese 'kawaii' culture and global appeal, utilizing minimalist features—most notably the absence of a mouth—to allow the viewer to project their own emotions onto the character. Over the decades, she evolved from a stationery icon into a global lifestyle brand, eventually becoming the flagship character for the Sanrio franchise's expansive merchandise lines.
Funko introduced the Hello Kitty Pop! vinyl figure as part of the Pop! Sanrio series, assigning this specific iteration the number 66. The figure adopts the hallmark Funko aesthetic, featuring a stylized oversized head and simplified proportions while maintaining the character’s classic blue overalls and iconic red hair bow. Released to commemorate the enduring collaboration between Sanrio and major pop culture collectibles, the figure is designed to appeal to both long-time fans of the character and modern collectors of vinyl figures.
