Where it came from
Kuromi made her debut in 2005 as a character within the Sanrio universe, specifically introduced as a mischievous rival to My Melody in the television series Onegai My Melody. Designed by the Sanrio creative team, she was conceptualized with a punk-inspired aesthetic characterized by her black jester's hat with a pink skull, a design choice intended to contrast with the traditionally sweet and pastel-heavy motifs of the brand's earlier icons.
The Funko Pop! Kuromi figure, numbered 55 in the Sanrio series, translates this character into the brand's signature stylized vinyl form. Released as part of an ongoing collaboration between Funko and Sanrio, the figure was designed to appeal to both long-time fans of the gothic-cute aesthetic and contemporary toy collectors. It remains a staple in the expansive Sanrio toy line, reflecting the enduring popularity of the character's 'edgy' personality within the wider pop culture landscape.
