Where it came from
Kuromi was introduced by Sanrio in 2005 as a mischievous rival to My Melody, originally appearing in the anime series Onegai My Melody. Designed with a distinct punk-inspired aesthetic—notably her black jester hat and skull motif—she was intended to subvert the traditional 'kawaii' archetypes found in the Sanrio portfolio. Over the years, her popularity has surged, leading to her being celebrated as a mascot for those who appreciate a blend of sweetness and rebellion.
This Funko Pop! figure, numbered 119 in the Sanrio series, was produced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the My Melody character. By translating Kuromi’s signature silhouette into Funko’s stylized, vinyl aesthetic, the design maintains her iconic color palette and recognizable features. As part of a legacy collection, it serves as a collectible bridge between the long-standing history of the Sanrio brand and the contemporary interest in pop culture vinyl figures.
