Where it came from
Kuromi, the mischievous rival to My Melody, was originally introduced by Sanrio in 2005. As a character designed to embody a punk-rock aesthetic with her signature black jester's hat and pink skull motif, she represents a departure from the traditional sweetness associated with the Sanrio brand. Her companion, Baku—a tapir-like creature—serves as her loyal sidekick and primary mode of transportation, reflecting the whimsical yet slightly edgy narrative style Sanrio adopted during the early 2000s to appeal to a broader demographic.
This Funko Pop! figure, number 63 in the Sanrio series, translates Kuromi's distinctively rebellious character design into the iconic stylized vinyl format. The piece captures Kuromi perched atop Baku, a choice that highlights their close dynamic within the franchise lore. Upon its release, the figure was met with significant enthusiasm from collectors and fans of the 'Sanrio aesthetic' movement, marking a successful intersection between classic character design and contemporary collectible culture.
