Where it came from
Kuromi was introduced by Sanrio in 2005 as a mischievous rival to My Melody, originating from the animated series Onegai My Melody. Designed with a distinct gothic-punk aesthetic featuring a black jester’s hat and a pink skull motif, she was conceived to embody a rebellious yet endearing counterpoint to the more traditional sweetness associated with earlier Sanrio characters.
The Funko Pop! vinyl figure number 71 was released as part of the expanded Sanrio collection, capturing Kuromi’s signature pout and stylistic flair in the brand's iconic blocky, large-headed format. Like much of the Sanrio Pop! line, it was designed to appeal to both long-time fans of the franchise and collectors of contemporary pop culture figures, quickly becoming a staple in the character's extensive merchandise catalog due to the enduring popularity of the character's 'kawaii-goth' appeal.
