Where it came from
Kuromi was introduced by Sanrio in 2005 as a mischievous rival to My Melody, characterized by her black jester’s hat with a pink skull. Created as a counterpart to the softer, more traditional Sanrio aesthetic, she represents a 'punk' or 'gothic' edge that appealed to a different segment of the brand's fanbase. Her design was developed to embody a spunky, rebellious personality, serving as the leader of the biker gang known as Kuromi's 5.
This Funko Pop! figure, number 113 in the Sanrio series, translates her signature look into the stylized, large-headed format common to the brand. Released to meet the surge in demand for non-traditional, 'edgier' Sanrio characters, the figure captures her distinct expression and monochromatic color palette. It has been well-received by collectors who appreciate the juxtaposition of Sanrio's classic design language with a more defiant, character-driven persona.
