Where it came from
Kuromi was introduced by Sanrio in 2005 as a rival to the character My Melody. Initially appearing in the anime Onegai My Melody, she was designed by Sanrio designers to provide a mischievous, punk-inspired counterpart to the more traditional sweetness of earlier Sanrio characters. Her aesthetic, characterized by a black jester's hat with a pink skull, quickly gained a dedicated following for its subversive take on the classic 'kawaii' brand identity.
This Funko Pop! figure, numbered 73 in the Sanrio series, represents the brand's effort to integrate Kuromi into the mainstream vinyl figure market. As part of the broader Pop! Sanrio line, the design adheres to the standard Funko stylization while retaining the character's signature features. The figure was released to satisfy the significant consumer demand for merchandise featuring the character, who has evolved from a niche television antagonist into one of Sanrio’s most popular modern icons.
