Where it came from
Released in 2010, the Series 1 LEGO Minifigure collection marked a significant shift in the company's product strategy by introducing a mystery-bag format for individual figures. This set of 16 distinct characters was designed to provide fans with accessible, high-quality, and character-driven figures without the necessity of purchasing large, expensive playsets. The collection tapped into the growing adult collector market while remaining a staple for children, fundamentally changing how LEGO products were sold at retail checkouts.
The designs for Series 1 were rooted in classic LEGO archetypes—such as the Caveman, the Robot, and the Cheerleader—reimagined with detailed printing and unique accessories. While the design team sought to capture a wide range of diverse, humorous, and iconic personalities, the initial reception was overwhelmingly positive, surprising even the company with its immediate success. This series laid the groundwork for what would become a long-running, bi-annual blind-bag phenomenon that persists today.
