Where it came from
Released in 2011, the LEGO Minifigures Series 4 collection followed the successful launch of the blind-bag concept in 2010. This initiative allowed LEGO to explore niche character archetypes, ranging from historical figures like the Viking and the Musketeer to whimsical designs such as the Hazmat Guy and the Monster. The series was designed to encourage collectability through randomized packaging, fostering a vibrant secondary market and a new way for fans to engage with the brand through thematic variety rather than traditional set building.
The character designs for Series 4 were developed by the LEGO design team to maximize personality within the limitations of the classic minifigure form. Key figures like the Surfer, the Hockey Player, and the Kimono Girl showcased advanced printing techniques and unique molded accessories that distinguished them from standard set-based figures. The series was well-received by the adult fan community and casual collectors alike, solidifying the blind-bag format as a permanent and highly anticipated staple of the LEGO release calendar.
