Where it came from
Released in August 2011, LEGO Minifigures Series 5 represented a significant expansion of the company's blind-bag strategy, which had debuted just a year prior. These figures were produced to capture a wide array of historical, fantasy, and professional archetypes, ranging from the Gladiator and the Egyptian Queen to the Cave Woman and the Fitness Instructor. The series was designed to encourage collectibility by offering unique accessories and distinct print details that were often not available in standard, larger LEGO sets at the time.
The design of Series 5 followed the established aesthetic of the blind-bag line, focusing on modularity and charm. Each character was crafted to be aesthetically distinct, with artists incorporating intricate printing on the torso, legs, and occasionally the back of the head. Upon release, the series was well received by the AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) community and casual consumers alike for its variety and the tactical satisfaction of feeling for specific bags in retail display boxes to complete a full set.
