Where it came from
Nursing the Baby, set 1406-1, was released by the LEGO Group in 1983 as part of the Duplo line. This set was designed for toddlers, focusing on early roleplay and emotional development by depicting a mother figure caring for an infant. It represents the company's broader effort in the early 1980s to expand their preschool offerings with sets that encouraged nurturing play and simple construction, utilizing the larger, safer brick dimensions that define the Duplo brand.
The set features the classic, chunky Duplo aesthetic characterized by simple color palettes and rounded, friendly figures. While the individual design credits for specific small sets from this era are rarely publicized, the aesthetic reflects the work of LEGO’s internal design team, which aimed to create durable, tactile toys that would survive the vigorous handling of young children. It was well-received as an accessible educational tool, remaining a nostalgic example of 1980s preschool toy design.
