Where it came from
Abundance was originally introduced in the Urza's Saga set in 1998, designed as part of a cycle of enchantments that offered players unique ways to manipulate their libraries. The card was reimagined for the Commander 2017 release, a set specifically curated to support the multiplayer Commander format. This iteration features updated card frames and layout adjustments consistent with modern Magic: The Gathering production standards, intended to improve legibility and integration into the increasingly complex pool of cards available to players.
The artwork for the Commander 2017 printing retains the thematic focus of the original illustration by Heather Hudson, which centers on motifs of nature and growth. The design aims to mechanically represent the concept of 'abundance' by allowing a player to forgo a standard draw in exchange for selecting a specific card type, effectively filtering the deck. The card is widely regarded as a staple in green-aligned Commander decks for its utility in maintaining resource consistency and its thematic synergy with land-based strategies.
