Provenance

Where it came from

The Tocatli Honor Guard was released as a promotional card for the Ixalan set of Magic: The Gathering in 2017. It features alternate art exclusive to this promotional printing, distinguishing it from the standard version found in booster packs. The card was distributed through various organized play channels, such as store championships or preview events, intended to reward players for their participation in the game's community during the exploration-themed expansion.

The visual design draws heavily from the meso-American inspired aesthetic of the Sun Empire within the Ixalan setting. The artwork captures the disciplined, rigid nature of the card's function—a mechanical effect that nullifies enter-the-battlefield abilities. By emphasizing the ornate, feathered armor and ceremonial posture of the soldier, the illustrator reinforced the card's role as a stalwart guardian, grounding the mechanical gameplay in the cohesive cultural world-building that characterized the block.
