Where it came from
Aetherflux Reservoir was originally introduced in the Kaladesh set in 2016, designed to reward players for casting multiple spells in a single turn by granting life gain that could eventually be spent to deal damage. The card reflects the ingenuity of Kaladesh’s inventors, who harnessed the power of Aether to fuel their intricate technological marvels. Its mechanical identity quickly established it as a centerpiece for combo decks, where players aim to chain low-cost spells together to reach the threshold of fifty life.
The version from The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts series features a unique 'schematic' art style intended to evoke the feel of blueprints from the lore of Magic: The Gathering’s ancient past. This subset of cards was created as a nostalgic tribute to the artifact-heavy themes of the game's early history, specifically referencing the conflict between Urza and Mishra. By presenting the Reservoir in this technical drafting style, the designers emphasized its role as a monumental invention within the game's expansive narrative history.
