Where it came from
Aetherflux Reservoir was introduced in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering set Kaladesh, an expansion defined by its art deco and steampunk-inspired aesthetic. The card reflects the set's central theme of aether-based technology, representing a massive engine capable of storing magical energy. Mechanically, it captures the high-risk, high-reward nature of the plane's industrial innovation by allowing players to pay a significant amount of life to fuel a devastating spell.
The 192s promotional version, often distributed as a buy-a-box or event-specific incentive, features distinct card borders and occasionally alternate framing unique to the Kaladesh promotional line. The illustration by Cliff Childs focuses on the reservoir's immense scale and glowing, crystalline core, emphasizing the industrial grandeur that defined the artistic direction of the Kaladesh block. It remains a hallmark of artifacts that reward synergistic, combo-oriented deck building.
