Where it came from
Aeve, Progenitor Ooze was introduced in the 2021 set Modern Horizons 2, a product designed specifically for the Modern format in Magic: The Gathering. The card was created to provide a high-power, combo-oriented payoff for the 'storm' mechanic, which rewards players for casting multiple spells in a single turn. Its design focuses on creating an escalating board presence, reflecting the chaotic and self-replicating nature of an ooze.
The art for the card was provided by illustrator Campbell White, who leaned into the surreal and viscous aesthetic associated with ooze creatures in the game's multiverse. Within the set's development, Aeve was intended to serve as a build-around centerpiece for players exploring green-based storm archetypes. Upon release, it was well-received by fans of complex deck construction for its unique ability to turn a flurry of low-cost spells into a formidable army of tokens.
