Where it came from
Diplomatic Escort was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Mercadia, the expansion introduced themes of commerce, political intrigue, and deception, reflected in the set's mechanics and card identities. The card itself serves as a representation of the defensive, protective elements inherent in the set's complex political landscape.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Jeff Miracola. His design for the Diplomatic Escort features a stylized, armored figure consistent with the aesthetic direction of the Mercadian Masques set, which often leaned into themes of mercenaries and elite security forces. Upon its release, the card was generally viewed by the community as a niche utility piece, valued primarily for its specific protective abilities within the context of tournament gameplay during that era.
