What it does
Flying
As the ship approached, the jade totem rose high overhead. Power rippled. Eyes of stone glowed and crackled. Out hissed a breath of the world, and a windstorm came alive.

Where it came from
Air Elemental has been a foundational creature card in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game since its inception in the Alpha set of 1993. As a classic representation of blue magic's affinity for flight and evasion, it was reintroduced in the Core Set 2020 to provide a reliable, high-utility flying threat for limited and constructed play. The card serves as a quintessential example of the game's creature power creep evolution, remaining a staple baseline for mid-game aerial dominance.
The 2020 iteration features artwork by Svetlin Velinov, who sought to capture the ethereal, swirling essence of a living windstorm. His design emphasizes the elemental's fluidity and chaotic motion, moving away from the more static depictions seen in earlier editions. Upon release, this version was well-received by the player base for its clean, modern aesthetic that honors the original spirit of the card while fitting the high-fidelity visual standards of contemporary digital painting in the game.
