Where it came from
The Air Elemental was introduced in the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, anchoring the blue color identity of Magic: The Gathering as a powerful flying creature. By the time it was reprinted for the Fourth Edition core set in 1995, the card had solidified its status as a staple of the game's early metagame, prized by players for its efficient evasion and reliable offensive capabilities. Fourth Edition represented a transitional era for the game, marking the first time the card was printed with a modern frame and the updated card back.
The iconic illustration for this version is credited to Richard Thomas, one of the game's foundational artists and former art director. Thomas sought to capture the volatile and intangible essence of the elemental, utilizing a swirling, ethereal aesthetic that prioritized movement over solidity. His work on this card became emblematic of the visual language established during the game's inception, and it remains a touchstone for collectors who appreciate the minimalist, high-fantasy art direction of mid-90s trading cards.
