Where it came from
The Air Elemental from the Portal Second Age set, released in 1998, represents a transitional moment in the history of Magic: The Gathering. This set was specifically designed as an introductory product to simplify the game's complex rules for new players, stripping away the intricate timing windows of the standard base sets. It drew heavily from the flavor of the Portal setting, which focused on a high-fantasy, pseudo-medieval aesthetic that prioritized accessibility over mechanical depth.
The card art for this iteration of the Air Elemental was illustrated by Donato Giancola, who brought a more painterly, classical sensibility to the creature's design. By focusing on the fluidity and ephemeral nature of the elemental, Giancola moved away from the more jagged, aggressive depictions common in early Magic art. Upon release, the set was viewed by veteran players as a simplified entry point, while its unique card frame and art direction became a distinct footnote for collectors interested in the evolution of the game’s visual identity.
