Provenance

Where it came from

The Air Elemental featured in the Beatdown Box Set was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2000 as part of a standalone product designed to introduce new players to the Magic: The Gathering card game. This set, formatted as two pre-constructed 60-card decks, was designed to showcase the contrast between the color philosophies of green and red, with the blue Air Elemental card included as a staple creature within the set’s thematic structure.

The design of the card utilizes the classic artwork originally commissioned for the Alpha edition, famously illustrated by Richard Thomas. Thomas aimed to capture the ephemeral and ethereal nature of the elemental, a style that became a foundational visual touchstone for early Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. The card remained a highly recognizable fixture in beginner play due to its straightforward utility and its representation of the iconic blue flying mechanic.
