Where it came from
Ajani, Strength of the Pride was released in 2019 as a centerpiece planeswalker for the Core Set 2020 expansion of Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to be a callback to the popular Ajani Goldmane, incorporating his signature white-aligned abilities focused on life gain, token creation, and board control. Wizards of the Coast utilized this card to reinforce the identity of the mono-white archetype within the standard rotation of that era.
The card features artwork by illustrator Wesley Burt, who opted for a dynamic, heroic depiction of the leonine leonin planeswalker. His design emphasizes a sense of nobility and spiritual strength, aligning with the character's long-established narrative role as a protector. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its synergy with lifelink-focused decks, cementing its status as a staple for players building around the iconic Ajani character.
