Where it came from
Ajani, Strength of the Pride was introduced in the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in July 2019. This specific iteration, bearing the collector number 2p, is a promotional variant featuring alternate artwork by artist Magali Villeneuve. The card was designed as a powerful planeswalker card, focusing on Ajani Goldmane's role as a protector and healer within the game's lore.
Magali Villeneuve, a renowned fantasy illustrator, crafted this piece to emphasize Ajani's stoic and commanding presence. The design reflects the character’s evolution as a mentor figure for the Gatewatch. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its ability to stabilize life totals and create a significant battlefield presence, quickly becoming a staple in white-based control and life-gain deck archetypes.
