Where it came from
Ajani's Chosen was released in 2013 as part of the Magic 2014 Core Set. It was designed to support the enchantment-themed mechanics prevalent in the set, specifically providing a creature token whenever an enchantment spell is cast. The card was created during a period where Wizards of the Coast was placing a renewed emphasis on card interactions that rewarded players for building synergistic decks around specific permanent types.
The artwork was illustrated by Steve Argyle, a prolific contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. His depiction captures the Leonin warrior in a heroic, protective stance, consistent with the lore of Ajani Goldmane, the planeswalker the card honors. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players in the Limited and Casual formats for its ability to generate board presence, cementing its place as a reliable utility card for Selesnya-colored strategies.
