Where it came from
Animal Magnetism was released in 2002 as part of the Onslaught expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set marked the beginning of a new storyline involving the Phyrexians and the plane of Otaria. The card was designed as a sorcery that allowed players to return creatures from a graveyard to the battlefield, reflecting the set's mechanical focus on graveyard recursion and synergy.
The card features artwork by Ron Spencer, a prominent illustrator known for his distinct, gritty aesthetic during the early years of the game. Spencer’s composition for this piece emphasizes the chaotic, primal nature of the spell, utilizing deep shadows and dynamic lines to convey the magical influence exerted over the depicted creatures. Upon its release, it was regarded as a niche utility card, valued primarily by players exploring deck archetypes that utilized the graveyard as an extension of their hand.
