Where it came from
The Animal Friend card was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Fallout Commander set in 2024. This collaborative expansion brought the post-apocalyptic aesthetic of the Fallout video game franchise to the tabletop trading card game, allowing players to incorporate iconic wasteland creatures, technology, and characters into their decks. The card specifically draws inspiration from the long-standing perk system found throughout the Fallout series, which allows players to pacify or befriend dangerous wasteland wildlife.
The card features thematic artwork created by the artist set for the expansion, emphasizing the iconic bond between the game's protagonists and their mutated animal companions. Like other cards in the Fallout release, it was designed to blend the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering with the established lore and visual language of the Bethesda Softworks titles. It was received as a functional and flavorful addition to the set, aimed at both long-time fans of the video games and established players of the card game.
