Where it came from
Animal Sanctuary was released in 2020 as part of the Core Set 2021 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a utility land that provides colorless mana, its primary function is to support tribal decks centered around creature types such as Cats, Dogs, Birds, and Snakes. The card was created to provide players with a repeatable method to return creatures to their hands, offering a defensive tactical option in gameplay that favors creature-based synergies.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a soft, ethereal aesthetic to depict the sanctuary. The design intent was to capture a sense of peace and protection, distinguishing the card from the more aggressive landscapes typically found in the game. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its niche utility in Commander and other casual formats, where the ability to protect and reuse creature abilities remains highly valued by deck builders.
