Where it came from
Annex Sentry was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Phyrexia: All Will Be One. The set serves as the climax to a multi-year narrative arc where the Phyrexians, a race of biomechanical horrors, successfully invade the plane of Mirrodin. This card represents a defensive unit within this new, corrupted landscape, reflecting the set's aesthetic transition from the metallic nature of original Mirrodin into the grotesque, oil-slicked biomechanics of New Phyrexia.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the quintessential Phyrexian design philosophy of combining rigid, industrial armor with unsettling, organic features. The illustration emphasizes the 'compleation' process, where living beings are repurposed into tools for the Phyrexian machine. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the set's focus on the 'toxic' and 'for mirrodin!' mechanics, serving as a tactical piece of removal that reflects the themes of capture and forced integration prevalent in the set's lore.
