Where it came from
The Plains card numbered 253 from the 2014 Magic: The Gathering set Khans of Tarkir was produced by Wizards of the Coast to anchor the set's central theme of a war-torn, faction-driven world. The set introduced players to the plane of Tarkir, a harsh environment defined by the influence of ancient dragon lineages and five distinct warrior clans. This specific card was designed to reflect the visual identity of the Abzan Houses, a clan known for their endurance, fortification, and connection to the arid, desert-like expanses of their territory.
The artwork for this card was rendered by Richard Wright, a longtime contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Wright sought to emphasize the rugged, desolate aesthetic of the Abzan lands, utilizing a muted color palette to convey the harshness of the environment and the architectural resilience of the clan's outposts. Upon its release, the card was widely distributed as a common land, serving its utilitarian role in draft and constructed formats while contributing to the cohesive atmospheric world-building that the Khans of Tarkir expansion is noted for among enthusiasts.
