Where it came from
Assault Formation was originally printed in the 2015 set Dragons of Tarkir, designed by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card was created to provide a specialized effect for green-aligned decks, allowing creatures to assign combat damage based on their toughness rather than their power. This mechanic was intended to incentivize the use of high-toughness, defensive creatures as offensive threats, offering a unique strategic pivot for players who favored durability over traditional raw attack strength.
The artwork for the card, illustrated by Volkan Baga, depicts a stylized, armored creature preparing for a defensive charge, fitting the theme of a coordinated tactical maneuver. As part of 'The List'—a curated selection of cards from Magic's history that can be found in modern booster packs—this version retains the original flavor and mechanics of the Dragons of Tarkir release. The design remains a niche but respected utility card among players who enjoy constructing decks around unconventional combat interactions.
