Where it came from
Assault Formation was originally introduced in the Dragons of Tarkir set in 2015, designed to facilitate a strategy where creatures deal combat damage equal to their toughness rather than their power. This mechanic provides a distinct shift in gameplay for green-aligned decks, rewarding players for prioritizing high-defense creatures that are typically relegated to defensive roles. The Iconic Masters printing, released in 2017, featured the card with updated frame technology while retaining the original artwork by Greg Staples, who captured the card's theme with a dynamic, muscular illustration of a hulking entity.
The reception of the card within the Magic: The Gathering community has been largely positive, particularly among Commander players who enjoy niche or 'janky' deck-building challenges. By effectively turning walls and utility creatures into aggressive threats, the card anchors a specific archetype often referred to as 'Toughness Matters.' Its inclusion in the Iconic Masters set helped broaden its availability, ensuring that players focused on this thematic synergy could easily acquire copies for their collections.
