Where it came from
Assault Formation was introduced in the 2015 Dragons of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering and later reprinted in the 2020 Jumpstart set. The card was designed to support a niche archetype that allows creatures to assign combat damage based on their toughness rather than their power, providing a unique tactical shift for decks featuring high-defense creatures. This mechanical identity fits squarely within the green color identity of the game, which often emphasizes defensive resilience.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk. Known for his work across numerous sets, Kieryluk focused on depicting a swarm of creatures coordinating under the enchantment's magical influence. The design aimed to visually capture the essence of a fortified line turning into an offensive force. Upon release, it was well-received by players seeking to build 'wall' or 'defender' tribal decks, becoming a staple for casual formats and Commander players looking for unconventional combat strategies.
