Where it came from
Assault Formation was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support a niche mechanical theme within the set that encouraged players to utilize a creature's toughness rather than its power for combat damage, subverting the traditional aggressive strategies of the game. It emerged from a period of design experimentation that sought to make defensive-minded creatures viable threats on the battlefield.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, whose distinct style brings a sense of tangible weight and structure to the card's theme. The illustration depicts a group of armored soldiers preparing for a coordinated strike, visually reinforcing the concept of defensive strength becoming an offensive tool. It has since become a staple card in Commander format decks, where it is frequently utilized by players looking to build decks around creatures with high defensive statistics.
