Where it came from
The Assault Suit card was released in 2014 as part of the Commander 2014 set for Magic: The Gathering, specifically featured within the Built from Scratch preconstructed deck. This card serves as a representative piece for the Commander format's emphasis on multiplayer interaction, designed to encourage players to distribute equipment among opponents to influence the flow of combat while keeping the controller protected.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and character-driven fantasy art. The design aims to capture the chaotic nature of the Warhammer 40,000-inspired aesthetic, emphasizing the weight and metallic texture of the suit. Upon release, it was well-received by the player base for its unique political mechanic, which creates a memorable 'forced-gifting' play pattern that remains a staple of casual EDH tables.
