Where it came from
Ajani, Sleeper Agent was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set. This card portrays the fan-favorite Planeswalker Ajani Goldmane following his capture and subsequent Phyrexian compleation by the set's primary antagonists. The design reflects the narrative arc of the Phyrexian invasion, marking a dark turning point for the character as he transitions into a corrupted agent of New Phyrexia.
The card features artwork by Chase Stone, who captured the character’s unsettling transformation with a blend of metallic textures and corrupted biological elements. As a promotional release from the Dominaria United cycle, the card was produced with distinct border treatments to signify its status within the set's overarching storyline. It was well-received by players for its thematic resonance and the significant impact the character’s shift had on the Magic: The Gathering lore.
