Where it came from
Force of Will was originally released in the 1996 Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Mark Rosewater and others to provide a necessary check on the game's fast-paced combo decks. By allowing players to cast a counterspell without spending mana by exiling a blue card, it became a foundational staple of the Legacy and Vintage formats. Its design philosophy centers on trading card advantage for tempo, making it one of the most iconic and powerful interaction tools in the history of the game.
The version from the Secrets of Strixhaven Mystical Archive, numbered 19, features specialized, high-fantasy artwork created by Wisnutanum. Released in 2021 as a premium subset within the Strixhaven: School of Mages set, this version was designed to showcase the prestige and academic aesthetic of the Strixhaven plane. These cards were distributed in both Japanese and non-Japanese variants, featuring unique art frames that distinguish them from the card's original industrial, post-apocalyptic aesthetic.
