Where it came from
Vilis, Broker of Blood was originally introduced in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set Core Set 2020. This particular iteration is a special printing featured in the Secret Lair series, a line of premium, curated collections sold directly to players by Wizards of the Coast. These drops are known for their unique artistic treatments that diverge from the standard aesthetic of the core game, allowing the company to collaborate with guest artists to reinterpret iconic or powerful legendary creatures.
The art for this specific printing was created by the artist GodMachine. His design philosophy for this piece leans heavily into his signature style, characterized by intricate, mechanical, and highly detailed linework. By re-imagining Vilis through this grotesque, industrial lens, the card emphasizes the character's association with blood and decay, framing the demon as a complex, multi-layered entity that reflects the darker, more visceral side of the game's expansive lore.
