Provenance

Where it came from

Nevinyrral's Disk first appeared in the Limited Edition Alpha set released in 1993, the inaugural printing of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was conceived as a high-impact artifact that allowed players to destroy all artifacts, creatures, and enchantments on the battlefield, reflecting the game's early design philosophy of dramatic, board-resetting effects. The name is a famous palindrome, created by spelling the name of the designer's playtest group, Larry Niven, in reverse.

The card's iconic illustration was provided by Jeff A. Menges, whose atmospheric and slightly surreal style defined much of the early game's visual identity. Menges focused on capturing the destructive, swirling energy of the artifact, which helped cement the card as a quintessential piece of Magic history. Upon release, it was immediately recognized for its tactical versatility, becoming a staple of control decks and a highly sought-after collectible due to its significant impact on the game's mechanics.
