Where it came from
The Bird token was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set marked a return to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, focusing on the balance between humanity and the supernatural forces that occupy the world. Tokens like this one serve as essential gameplay aids, summoned by specific cards within the set to represent ephemeral creatures created through spells or abilities.
The artwork for this specific token was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to reflect the atmospheric, eerie aesthetic of the Innistrad setting. The design prioritizes the visual language of the plane, utilizing a muted, haunting color palette that emphasizes the dark fantasy tone of the Midnight Hunt block. Like other tokens from this era, it was created to provide functional utility for players while maintaining the high artistic standards consistent with the broader Magic: The Gathering design philosophy.
