Where it came from
The Marvel Super Heroes Commander Tokens were released in the 1990s as a promotional collectible, often found in retail blister packs or associated with Marvel-themed gaming sets of the era. These tokens were designed to function as game pieces or collectible markers, drawing on the immense popularity of the Marvel Universe during a decade defined by expansive comic book merchandising and cross-media branding efforts.
The character featured on token number 5, Bird, is a deep-cut inclusion from the Marvel pantheon. The design utilizes standard illustrative assets consistent with the house style of Marvel licensing during the 90s, aiming to provide fans with a tangible, metal or heavy plastic token for tabletop play. These items were received primarily as affordable novelty collectibles rather than high-end rarities, serving as a nostalgic relic of the period's pervasive Marvel marketing.
