Provenance

Where it came from

The Bird token was first released in 2009 as part of the Zendikar expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to represent the 1/1 flying creature summoned by specific cards in the set, such as Emeria Angel. The introduction of these tokens reflected Wizards of the Coast's move toward standardizing creature representations during gameplay, ensuring players had a consistent visual reference for temporary game pieces.

The artwork for this specific token was created by illustrator Kev Walker. Known for his moody and textured aesthetic within the Magic: The Gathering art direction, Walker’s design emphasizes a sleek, avian form that fits the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Zendikar plane. Upon its release, the token was widely appreciated for its clean composition and distinct departure from the more cluttered card art of the era, becoming a staple utility item for players building white-aligned decks.
