Where it came from
Bishop of Wings was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2020. This card was designed to support the Angel tribal archetype, providing a defensive engine for white-aligned decks by granting life gain whenever an Angel enters the battlefield and creating Spirit tokens whenever an Angel dies. It emerged during a period where Wizards of the Coast was focused on strengthening creature-type synergies within core sets to appeal to both newer players and those interested in casual tribal formats like Commander.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Volkan Baga, a frequent contributor to the game known for his painterly, classic fantasy style. Baga aimed to capture the protective and ethereal essence of the creature, depicting the Bishop with a sense of solemnity and grace. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency, particularly in competitive formats like Standard, where it became a staple in life-gain strategy decks due to its ability to generate significant value across the early and mid-game stages.
