Where it came from
Bitterblossom was first introduced in the 2008 Magic: The Gathering set Morningtide, designed by Aaron Forsythe as a tribal enchantment that generated recurring Faerie Rogue tokens at the cost of life. The card quickly became a foundational element in competitive formats due to its efficient resource generation, eventually earning a spot on the ban list in the Modern format for several years before being unbanned in 2014. Its enduring popularity stems from its ability to exert pressure on opponents while enabling powerful synergistic strategies.
The Ultimate Box Topper version, released in 2018 as part of the Ultimate Masters set, features distinct, oversized borderless art by Seb McKinnon. This specific printing was designed to serve as a premium collector's item, celebrating iconic cards from the game's history with stylized, atmospheric illustrations that moved away from the traditional card frame. The release was well-received by the player base for its aesthetic departure, making it a centerpiece for collectors interested in the artistic evolution of the game.
