Bonehoard was introduced in the Scars of Mirrodin expansion in 2010, though this specific printing originates from the Commander 2015 set released in November 2015. It was designed as an Equipment card that scales in power based on the number of creature cards in all graveyards, a mechanic that synergizes with the set's focus on graveyard-centric strategies and attrition-based combat. Its presence in the Commander 2015 preconstructed decks provided players with a recurring threat that grows increasingly dangerous as a game progresses.

The original illustration was created by Aleksi Briclot, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise.
