Provenance

Where it came from

Bonehoard was introduced in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering set Mirrodin Besieged, which depicted the ongoing conflict between the metallic inhabitants of the plane of Mirrodin and the encroaching corruption of the Phyrexians. As an artifact equipment card, it represents the scavenger-like nature of the environment, where the power of the card is mechanically tied to the number of creature cards residing in the graveyard, effectively turning the discarded remains of past battles into a functional weapon.

The card’s visual identity was brought to life by artist Steven Belledin, who leaned into the industrial and grotesque aesthetic established for the Phyrexians. By illustrating a massive, makeshift construct built from the skeletons of fallen combatants, Belledin captured the set's central theme of recycling death into growth. Upon its release, the card was recognized for its strategic utility in limited formats, particularly in decks capable of filling the graveyard quickly, and it remains a thematic staple for graveyard-centric strategies.
