Provenance

Where it came from

Bonehoard was originally released in the Scars of Mirrodin expansion in 2010. It reflects the set's central conflict between the inhabitants of the metallic plane of Mirrodin and the encroaching Phyrexian corruption. The card utilizes the Living Weapon mechanic, which creates a germ creature token equipped with the artifact as soon as it enters the battlefield, visually representing the parasitic nature of Phyrexian technology grafting itself onto living hosts.

The artwork was commissioned from the illustrator Chippy, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering. Known for a dark and tactile aesthetic, Chippy depicted the Bonehoard as a grotesque, skeletal assemblage of discarded armor and debris that animates to consume the dead. Upon its release, the card was recognized for its strategic utility in graveyard-focused decks, where its power and toughness scale based on the number of creature cards in all graveyards.
